Behind the designRead the story

A note in the margin can take on a life of its own.

In 1637 Pierre de Fermat wrote that he had discovered a remarkable proof. The margin unfortunately was too small to contain it.

The claim itself was simple enough to understand.

Two squares can add up to another square. Three squared plus four squared equals five squared. But replace the exponent with any whole number greater than two and no three positive integers will make the equation work.

A short statement.

More than three centuries of work.

That small margin became the starting point for Fermat: Margin Capacity Exceeded.

We imagined the page as a document that had simply run out of room. The mathematics takes its place. The border holds its line. There is even a space marked PROOF.

It remains empty.

MARGIN CAPACITY EXCEEDED.

More than 350 years later Andrew Wiles finally delivered the proof with Richard Taylor helping resolve a crucial gap. Their work was published in 1995.

We chose Fermat because there is something wonderfully human about that original note. The confidence. The unfinished explanation. The generations of mathematicians who could not quite leave it alone.

The margin was small.

What followed was enormous.

Beauty. Discovery. Depth.

Fabric & care

Soft, lightweight cotton for comfortable everyday wear. Our current Black and Navy Bella + Canvas shirts are 100% combed and ring-spun cotton, approximately 4.2 oz/yd² (142 g/m²). These are lightweight shirts, not heavyweight tees.

Turn inside out. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with similar colors and mild detergent. Avoid fabric softener and bleach. Do not dry-clean. Air-dry where practical, or tumble-dry on low. Use a cool iron inside out if needed; never iron directly on the printed design.

Pre-shrunk does not mean shrink-proof. Warm or hot washing and high-heat drying can cause further shrinkage and affect the print. Follow the care label supplied with your garment.
